Dried Caesar’s Mushroom

Caesar’s mushrooms are considered one of the best and most expensive edible mushrooms and it has been like this for several centuries. This is where its name Caesar’s mushroom comes from, as the mushroom was already very popular in the imperial times of the Roman Empire. Caesar’s mushroom definitely rivals the highly praised porcini mushroom. The reason that porcini mushrooms are more famous is simply because Caesar’s mushrooms are rarer in Germany. Its flavour is nutty and intense. Caesar’s mushrooms are wild mushrooms and therefore do not come from regulated cultivation. They were collected in the northern forests of Spain and then dried.

In our opinion, Caesar’s mushrooms taste best with:

  • Salad
  • as a side dish

Why are dried mushrooms so expensive, relatively speaking, and are there any advantages at all?

Fresh mushrooms contain a lot of water and lose up to 90% of their weight when dried. This justifies the higher price of dried mushrooms compared to fresh mushrooms. But don’t worry. The dried mushrooms swell to almost their conventional size during soaking and both their taste and consistency remain almost unchanged. One of the biggest advantages of dried mushrooms is their shelf life.  If stored correctly, sufficiently dried mushrooms can be kept for several years without any noticeable loss of quality. It is important for the shelf life that the mushrooms are stored in an airtight container.
